Counting Blessings: Gratitude List

Counting Blessings: Gratitude List

One of the worship hymns I can sing without looking at the lyrics is the song “Count Your Blessings” by Johnson Oatman Jr. The chorus of the song says,

Count your blessings;
Name them one by one.
Count your blessings;
See what God hath done.
Count your blessings;
Name them one by one.
Count your many blessings;
See what God hath done.

This is why I’m writing this gratitude post. Sometimes, life gets too stressful that we forget we get so many blessings every day. Hence this gratitude list. Also to remind me of God’s goodness in our lives.

My Gratitude List

  1. Dane is coming home for good.
  2. Nate and Dane are both healed from a cough.
  3. I got a raise.
  4. We’re facing a new life challenge when Dane comes home.
  5. My family is healthy.
  6. We got a refund from the PAL flight that we canceled.
  7. This is a great year!
  8. We have enough money to pay for our monthly contributions and expenses.
  9. We have food to eat every day.
  10. I am saved by grace.

Why it’s Good to Name our Blessings One by One

It’s pretty easy to count our problems, isn’t it? The bills are piling up – boom, problem! You or your family is sick – boom, problem! There’s an emergency – boom, problem! We can count our problems without any trouble!

The thing is, when we focus too much on problems, we forget we’re also receiving blessings!

I am one to complain easily sometimes. So, even I, myself, need to remind myself to name my blessings one by one. By making this a habit, I’m sure I’ll have a better outlook on life.

Worship Service Preaching – 1 Corinthians 10:13

Our worship service lesson yesterday with Ptr. Joe Centino, our associate pastor, was about 1 Corinthians 10:13. The verse says:

“There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”

Between Dane and me, I am the one who worries easily. I worry about many things and even panic sometimes. So, yesterday’s preaching was another reminder to me about life’s temptations that are thrown at me. Yesterday, I was reminded that 1. no temptation given to me that’s not common, 2. God is faithful – he knows what I’m capable of, 3. and when I get tempted, He helps me find a way out.

Counting Blessings

Even though I try to make it a habit, sometimes, I lose count of my blessings. I should do this gratitude list more often – it’s a great exercise to help have a positive outlook in life always. Makes me have good vibes, despite all the challenges we are facing each day.

I’ll end this post with the hymn’s stanzas because the lyrics can really hit us all!

Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly,
And you will keep singing as the days go by.

When you look at others with their lands and gold,
Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold;
Count your many blessings—wealth can never buy
Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high.

So, amid the conflict whether great or small,
Do not be discouraged, God is over all;
Count your many blessings, angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.

You might be facing problems right now – that might seem unbearable. I hope that this song serves as a reminder to you too, as it did to me, that we’re not doing this alone. And that despite life’s problems, there are blessings everywhere. We just have to look – and count.

Feel free to share your gratitude list!
