Let’s face it: cleaning is not the most enjoyable of tasks. In fact, people are always on the lookout for things that will make the job easier and a bit more bearable. This is why the Roomba is such a popular product — it made a chore fuss-free and fun. However, the Roomba can’t be used for all of the cleaning jobs around the house. You really need to gear up and get ready to get down and dirty to clean up your entire home.
So how do you make this task a lot easier and a bit more enjoyable? Here are a few home cleaning tips and tricks to help you out.
Buy the Right Tools and Supplies
Getting the right tools for the job is one of the best things you can do to make cleaning a breeze. The choice of the “right” tools and supplies depend on personal preferences and the things you have to clean; for example, you can’t use the same kind of cleaner on the hardwood and ceramic tiles. However, there are some cleaning must-haves that everyone should invest in. These include items such as microfiber cloths, mops, and dusters; a sturdy broom and a matching dustpan; and a good pair of rubber gloves.
It’s also a good idea to have some baking soda and white vinegar on the ready. These two readily available items can save you a lot of trouble when it comes degreasing, deodorizing, and scrubbing. Eco-friendly cleaners and sanitizers should also make their way into your cleaning cabinets. Not only are these safer for the environment, they’re also better for your health.
Set and Follow a Schedule
Cleaning might not be an appealing task, but it’s something that needs to be done. Set aside some time for cleaning and follow that schedule. You don’t even have to do it all at once so you’re not exhausted by the end of the day. In fact, there are a lot of cleaning tasks — such as deep cleaning the toilet — that you have to do at least once a month or so only. The little things you have to do every day, such as making the bed, washing the dishes and other small chores can be spread out through the whole day.
When you follow a schedule, you give yourself structure so the tasks don’t feel aimless. You can also give yourself a little treat if you finish ahead of schedule. A little pat on the back, if you will, for a job well done!

Dress Up for It
This is a little similar to getting the right tools; when you’re dressed for the job, it’s easier for you to move. Cleaning requires a lot of movement, not to mention dealing with chemicals, so you ought to find the right clothes that will give you a full range of motion and protective equipment that will keep you safe. These include comfortable clothing that is easy to wash (and you aren’t afraid of getting stained), supportive shoes, gloves, and goggles. You can also include knee pads if you’re going to be kneeling a lot. Consider this set of clothing and protective items as your cleaning uniform; when you’re dressed up for the job, you’ll find that it is easier to accomplish anything.
Play Some Music
When cleaning gets a little tedious and repetitive, try playing some of your favorite tunes to distract yourself from the mundanity. In fact, music can actually help you finish cleaning — a highly boring task for many — faster. When it comes to the genre, choose the fast, dance-y tunes; a research from the University of Illinois found that listening to fast(er) music helps people feel more energized, and increases output for all types of work by 6.3 percent.
Divide the House into Zones
A simple way to do this is to tackle cleaning on a room per room basis. Create a system of cleaning per room to make it easier and more organized, and so that you can do all that needs to be done in that particular room. The ideal progression is to start upstairs, then work your way down. Once you’re done cleaning a zone, don’t go back to it! If there’s anything that you missed, just do it later after you’ve accomplished the other zones in order. This is so that you don’t break your progress. Seeing what you’ve already accomplished is a huge motivator, and going back to a room you’ve already cleaned will essentially “ruin” the image of your progress.
Any task can be made easy and enjoyable, even cleaning! All you need is a system, the right gear, and a little bit of an incentive.
